43% of workers are considering a career change this year, but many may not take the leap. A recent survey by FlexJobs reveals that over 4 in 10 people are seeking new professional paths, driven by concerns about layoffs, the impact of artificial intelligence, and work-life balance. However, despite the desire for change, data shows that most individuals remain hesitant to leave their current employers. According to career expert Keith Spencer, this hesitation stems from a lack of clarity about desired roles and the transferability of existing skills. The traditional career trajectory of 'choosing a path, working hard, and climbing the ladder' is no longer appealing to many, as executive coach Megan Hellerer explains. The advent of AI has accelerated the collapse of linear career paths, prompting individuals to question the security of their chosen routes. As a result, there's a growing interest in creative and complex roles that AI struggles to replicate, as noted by economics professor Erik Brynjolfsson. However, the demand for white-collar skills remains uncertain, with a quit rate of 2% in December, compared to 3% during the 'great resignation' in November 2021. This reluctance to change careers is attributed to AI and economic uncertainty, a phenomenon some experts call 'job hugging' or 'the great stay'. Interestingly, the impact of generative AI is more pronounced among lower-income individuals, who are typically less inclined to quit due to their savings and qualifications. For those contemplating a career change, Hellerer suggests a 'curiosity campaign' as the first step. Instead of seeking purpose, individuals should follow their curiosity, exploring topics they're naturally drawn to. AI, while causing anxiety about job security, also presents an opportunity to reevaluate career choices and discover roles that leverage unique human strengths.
