Chad Pinder's New Role: Leading the White Sox' Triple-A Charlotte Knights (2026)

Chad Pinder is stepping into an exciting and vital role as the new manager for the Chicago White Sox' Triple-A affiliate, the Charlotte Knights. This transition comes shortly after Pinder hung up his cleats following the 2023 season, during which he played for the Triple-A teams associated with both the Nationals and Braves. Prior to that, he dedicated seven seasons to the Oakland Athletics, a journey that has shaped his understanding of the game.

Initially uncertain about his future post-retirement, Pinder recalled how his former manager, Bob Melvin, had humorously suggested he would one day take on a managerial position. "When I reached the big leagues and found myself in a role where I wasn't playing every day but was expected to demonstrate quiet leadership, Bob would often joke, 'You’re going to manage one day,'" Pinder shared during a Zoom call on Thursday. At that time, he dismissed the idea, thinking, "I don't want to do that." However, following his retirement, he found himself pondering his next steps.

While he began pursuing graduate studies, it wasn’t until his wife encouraged him that he began to entertain the thought of coaching. This led to an opportunity presented by Paul Janish, the director of player development, who offered Pinder the chance to manage at Single-A Kannapolis last season. Now, with great enthusiasm, Pinder has been named the manager for the Triple-A Charlotte Knights.

"We have a lot of trust in Chad to foster an environment where players can thrive," Janish expressed. "Triple-A can sometimes feel like a waiting area for older players who might become frustrated, but we are confident in Chad’s ability to guide them. We are genuinely excited about his new role in Charlotte."

For the White Sox organization, Pinder's appointment is timely, especially since six of their prospects have made it to Baseball America’s top 100 prospects list. These include left-handed pitcher Noah Schultz at number 26, infielder Caleb Bonemer at 27, outfielder Braden Montgomery at 73, left-hander Hagen Smith at 91, infielder Billy Carlson at 92, and right-hander Tanner McDougal at 100. Pinder will play a crucial part in nurturing these young talents as they edge closer to making their mark in Major League Baseball.

As Pinder transitions from managing Single-A players to those at the Triple-A level, he intends to maintain a consistent message: he wants his players to play freely. His experiences under the guidance of successful managers like Melvin, along with insights gained from working alongside notable players such as Marcus Semien, Matt Olson, and Matt Chapman, will be invaluable as he embarks on this new chapter. Pinder also emphasizes the importance of data analytics in baseball, a skill he honed during his tenure with the Athletics.

Reflecting on his own career, Pinder stated, "As a platoon player, while I always wanted to compete daily, I am incredibly thankful for the managers who recognized my strengths and placed me in situations where I could succeed, ultimately extending my career. I believe in leveraging statistics to put players in positions where they can excel."

In addition to Pinder’s new role, the White Sox have announced other managerial appointments: Patrick Leyland will take charge of Double-A Birmingham, former Sox player Jayson Nix will manage Single-A Kannapolis, and Daniel Gonzalez will oversee the Arizona Complex League White Sox.
