Cowboys Restructure Contracts: Dak Prescott, Tyler Smith, and More! | NFL Free Agency Preview (2026)

Get ready for some major moves in the world of American football! The Dallas Cowboys are about to shake things up as they prepare for the upcoming free agency period. The team's owner and GM, Jerry Jones, has a bold plan to reshape the franchise's future.

Starting with the restructuring of contracts, the Cowboys have created a significant amount of cap space, approximately $47 million, and they're not done yet! Dak Prescott and Tyler Smith's contract adjustments are just the beginning. CeeDee Lamb's contract is next on the list, which will boost the available cap space to a whopping $66 million. But here's where it gets controversial... Jones is also eyeing the contracts of their defensive tackles, Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, and Osa Odighizuwa, which could free up even more room for maneuver.

At the NFL Combine, Jones dropped a hint, saying, "I would bet that we will spend more money in free agency than we have." This strategy is expected to give the Cowboys the flexibility to bring in experienced players and strengthen their roster. Jones is ready to "borrow from his future" to make it happen, emphasizing the need to be aggressive and not waste any time.

"We can't afford to redshirt our second-round pick, even though we don't have one," Jones explained. "We need to go all in this year. We have to put it all on the line and make it count."

With the defense's performance last season in mind, it's likely that some of the free agency moves will focus on improving that side of the ball. Jones acknowledged that turning the defense into one of the best in the league in a single season might be a tall order, but he believes they don't need to be at the very top to succeed late in the season.

"I see a defense this year that can support our offense and get us into the playoffs, giving us a real shot once we're there. We don't need to be perfect, just better," Jones said. "We've addressed every aspect, and I strongly believe we're capable of not just improving, but playing defense at a level that will get us into the playoffs."

And this is the part most people miss... Jones isn't satisfied with just making the playoffs. He wants a defense that can carry the team to victory. So, will the Cowboys' bold moves pay off? Only time will tell. What do you think? Should the Cowboys focus on defense or other areas? Share your thoughts in the comments!
