It's a tough blow for the New York Jets: promising quarterback Dante Moore has announced he's returning to Oregon for the 2026 season. This decision leaves the Jets scrambling to find their franchise quarterback elsewhere.
Initially, Moore was projected to be the second quarterback selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, right after Indiana's Fernando Mendoza. Many analysts, including those at the New York Post, saw the Jets as a potential landing spot for Moore with the No. 2 pick. But, Moore's announcement on ESPN means the Jets must adjust their strategy.
Moore, reflecting on his choice, admitted it was a challenging one. During the past season, he showcased his skills, throwing for an impressive 3,565 yards and 30 touchdowns. However, with only 20 college starts under his belt and a less-than-stellar performance against Indiana in the college football playoffs, some scouts had reservations.
The Jets' Quarterback Quest Continues:
Now, the Jets face the task of finding a quarterback through various avenues: the draft, free agency, trades, or a combination of these. It's almost a classic Jets scenario to find themselves with the No. 2 pick in a draft with limited top-tier quarterback talent. This situation might force them to find a temporary solution for the 2026 season and then focus on 2027, when the draft is expected to be loaded with quarterback prospects, and the Jets have three first-round picks. Moore and Texas' Arch Manning are projected to be at the top of the 2027 class.
A Risky Decision:
Moore passed up a chance to secure approximately $50 million guaranteed if he had been drafted by the Jets. The deadline for underclassmen not in the College Football Playoff championship game to declare for the draft was Wednesday.
Moore's journey included a transfer from UCLA to Oregon, leading the Ducks to the semifinals. He secured significant victories for Oregon this season, and ESPN's Mel Kiper initially ranked him as the top quarterback in this year's draft before shifting Mendoza to No. 1 after the semifinal.
The Start Count Dilemma:
The limited number of starts, just 20 between UCLA and Oregon, raises concerns among NFL teams. Most scouts believe a college quarterback needs 25-30 starts to be ready for the NFL. Even if the Jets had drafted Moore, he might have needed to sit out most or all of the 2026 season before being ready to play.
A Poor Performance and Shifting Priorities:
Concerns about Moore intensified after a disappointing performance in Oregon's 56-22 loss to the Hoosiers. He threw a pick-six on the game's first play and fumbled twice during the game.

This decision isn't necessarily a major setback for the Jets, as they are still early in the draft process. They have been scouting college quarterbacks, but the coaches haven't yet weighed in on the prospects.
With Moore out of the picture, Alabama's Ty Simpson and Mississippi's Trinidad Chambliss are now at the top of the quarterback ratings after Mendoza. The Jets hold picks Nos. 16, 33, and 44, which could be used to draft a quarterback. The Jets are expected to move on from Justin Fields, who started nine games last season. The free agency options are not very appealing. General Manager Darren Mougey will have to navigate a challenging list of available quarterbacks.
