Eni's Strategic Move in Indonesia Yields Significant Gas Discovery
Eni's strategic partnership with Malaysia's Petronas has paid off with a substantial natural gas find offshore Indonesia. This discovery comes on the heels of their joint venture, which combines their offshore assets in Southeast Asia.
On Tuesday, Eni announced a significant gas discovery in the Konta-1 exploration well, located in the Kutei Basin, approximately 50 km off the coast of East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The Italian energy giant estimates an initial gas reserve of 600 billion cubic feet, with potential for over 1 trillion cubic feet. This discovery is strategically positioned near existing production facilities, offering significant development synergies.
The Konta discovery boosts Eni's confidence in its upcoming exploration drilling campaign, which includes four additional wells in the Kutei Basin in 2026. This campaign is expected to uncover more gas resources.
This significant find comes after Eni and Petronas announced a $15 billion investment plan to develop proved reserves in Indonesia and Malaysia over the next five years. As part of this plan, they aim to launch up to eight new upstream projects in the region over the next three years, according to Eni's CEO, Claudio Descalzi.
The joint venture will integrate a portfolio of gas-producing and development assets across Malaysia and Indonesia, targeting an initial production of over 300,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) and aiming for sustainable growth to over 500,000 boe/d in the medium term.
Eni's strategy in Southeast Asia aligns with its 'satellite model', similar to ventures in Norway, Angola, and the UK. This approach involves acquiring and developing satellite assets in various regions, showcasing Eni's commitment to expanding its global energy portfolio.
