Imagine a military leadership shake-up so significant, it's being called the most dramatic restructuring since the 1970s. That's exactly what's happening in Pakistan right now. Field Marshal Asim Munir, already a powerhouse as Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has been appointed the country's very first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). This isn't just a title change; it's a seismic shift in how Pakistan's military operates.
On Monday, the gravity of this change was on full display as Munir received a guard of honour at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. This ceremonial gesture, performed by contingents from the army, navy, and air force, symbolized the unification of Pakistan's armed forces under his command.
But here's where it gets controversial: this new structure, established through amendments to Article 243 of the Constitution, consolidates immense power. The CDF now holds operational, administrative, and strategic authority, effectively dismantling the tri-service coordination system that's been in place since 1976.
The government argues this streamlining will enhance efficiency and decision-making. Critics, however, worry about the concentration of power and the potential for reduced checks and balances.
And this is the part most people miss: the amendments also extended the tenure of service chiefs from three to five years, with the possibility of reappointment or extension. This means Munir, already appointed COAS in 2022, could theoretically hold the combined COAS-CDF position until 2035.
