Imagine pouring your heart and soul into something, only to have your dream snatched away at the last moment. That's the gut-wrenching reality Jitesh Sharma, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) wicket-keeper batter, faced when he was surprisingly omitted from India's T20 World Cup 2026 squad. Despite showing immense promise and earning a spot in India's T20I team, Jitesh found himself on the sidelines. But why? This is the question that has cricket fans buzzing.
Jitesh revealed that he was completely blindsided. He found out about his exclusion when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the team. He mentioned that he had no prior communication from the selectors, leaving him to grapple with the news publicly.
In a candid conversation with CricTracker, Jitesh shared the emotional toll of this setback. He admitted to being heartbroken. But here's where it gets controversial: the selection committee chief, Ajit Agarkar, later explained the rationale behind the squad changes. Jitesh, after hearing the explanation, found it to be valid. He even discussed it with coaches and selectors.
"I completely understood what they wanted to explain to me, and I agreed with it," he stated.
The selectors' choices extended beyond Jitesh, as they also excluded Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill, while welcoming back Rinku Singh and Ishan Kishan. This decision sparked debates among fans and experts alike.
Jitesh found solace in his family and a conversation with former India and RCB star Dinesh Karthik. "It was heartbreaking, as I had worked very hard to play in the ICC T20 World Cup. But that is destiny, I can't deny it. At that moment, I was numb and couldn't process anything. Spending time with my family and talking to Dinesh Karthik helped me move forward," he shared.
But here's the kicker: the selection of an opening batter as a wicket-keeper complicates matters for Jitesh.
