I-Team Investigation: No Charges Filed for Security Incident at Hopkins Airport
CLEVELAND (WJW) – In a surprising turn of events, the FOX 8 I-Team has revealed that no criminal charges will be brought against anyone in connection with a significant security breach at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, where a man traversed active runways.
This incident, which occurred in June, prompted an immediate shutdown of airport operations. Radio communications from the airport's operations center included urgent messages such as, "Stop all traffic. We’ve got somebody that jumped the fence on the north perimeter," and, "An individual jumped the fence. This is not a drill. He was running across the airfield."
According to police reports, the suspect, identified as Michael Perry, crashed a stolen vehicle, scaled the airport's security fence, and then sprinted across the airfield. While Perry was indicted on 29 separate charges linked to various crimes, including robbery, vehicle thefts, and collisions, there was no mention of charges related specifically to his actions on the airfield.
Further investigation revealed that the case was escalated to federal authorities; however, they opted not to file any charges. When approached for clarification, the U.S. Attorney’s Office provided a brief response stating, "The USAO declines to comment, thank you."
In addition, Cuyahoga County prosecutors conducted their own review of the incident involving the airport. They ultimately issued a statement indicating, "Regarding Michael Perry’s conduct on airport property, after reviewing the Ohio Revised Code, there were no relevant felony statutes that fit Perry’s conduct."
It is important to note that while Perry may not face charges for his actions within the airport, he is still facing consequences for his broader criminal conduct. Prosecutors confirmed that he has pleaded guilty to three counts of robbery and one count of criminal damaging, with sentencing scheduled for next week.
The chaotic scene back in June saw the intruder cover nearly half a mile within the restricted area of the airport before authorities managed to apprehend him. Despite this alarming breach of security, it appears that there will be no legal repercussions specifically tied to his incursion onto airport grounds.
