FCC Chair Brendan Carr, a Trump ally, has opened an investigation into ABC's daytime show, The View, for potentially violating equal time rules for candidate interviews. This comes after Colbert claimed his network's lawyers prevented him from airing an interview with Democratic hopeful James Talarico.
Talarico, who posted the interview on YouTube, accused the FCC of censorship. But Carr insists, "There was no censorship here at all." He emphasizes the responsibility of broadcasters to comply with FCC rules, adding a warning: "Those individual broadcasters are also going to have a potential liability."
Colbert, a long-time host, accused the Trump-led FCC of attempting to silence criticism of the administration. He highlighted Trump's TV-watching habits, suggesting a motive for the alleged censorship.
The controversy doesn't end there. The FCC's new guidance, issued in January, removed the equal opportunities exemption for talk shows, a ruling that had been in place since 2006. This has Democrats up in arms, with Commissioner Anna Gomez accusing the FCC of violating broadcasters' free speech rights.
"The FCC has no lawful authority to pressure broadcasters for political purposes," Gomez stated.
This isn't the first time Carr has faced controversy. In September, he pressured broadcasters to take Jimmy Kimmel off the air, facing bipartisan criticism.
