Seattle Mariners' Bryan Woo Opts for Rest Over WBC; Aims for 200 IP in 2026
The Seattle Mariners' star pitcher, Bryan Woo, has decided to skip the World Baseball Classic (WBC) to prioritize his health and workload management. According to MLB.com's Daniel Kramer, Woo's decision was driven by the desire to be "smart" about his pitch count, especially after a remarkable 2025 season. During that year, he threw a career-high 186 2/3 innings, a significant increase from the 135 1/3 and 131 2/3 innings he pitched in 2024 and 2023, respectively.
Woo expressed his eagerness to join Team USA, but also acknowledged the potential risks of overworking his body. He aims to build on his success, targeting 200 or more innings in the upcoming season. This strategic approach to workload management is a key aspect of his long-term goal of maintaining consistency and health.
The 26-year-old Woo was the Mariners' top pitcher in 2025, ranking fifth in the American League in ERA (2.94), third in WHIP (0.93), and tied for third in opponents' batting average (.200). He also recorded 198 strikeouts and 186 2/3 innings pitched, showcasing his exceptional performance.
However, Woo's season was cut short due to a right pectoral muscle injury, which sidelined him for nearly a month. He made a comeback in the postseason, pitching in Games 5 and 7 of the ALCS. Additionally, Woo's career was marked by a Tommy John surgery in 2021, just before the Mariners drafted him in the sixth round.
