The Boston Red Sox are reportedly facing stiff competition from the Arizona Diamondbacks in their pursuit of signing Alex Bregman, a 'surprise entrant' into the free agent market. According to reports, the Diamondbacks are 'kicking the tires' on the possibility of offering a hefty contract to the veteran third baseman, with some sources suggesting they have 'more than just kicking the tires'.
This development could be a major blow for the Red Sox, who had identified Bregman as a 'priority' this offseason after missing out on other impact bats like Pete Alonso. Bregman's value to the Red Sox last season was evident in his performance, batting .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBI over 433 at-bats, and his leadership in the young clubhouse. However, a quad strain hampered his performance in the second half of the season, with his production dipping after his injury.
The Diamondbacks' interest in Bregman could be a strategic move, as they have a need at the hot corner after trading away third baseman Eugenio Suarez at the trade deadline. Additionally, Arizona has emerged as a surprise player in free agency over the last few years, signing former Baltimore/Milwaukee ace Corbin Burnes to a $210 million contract in December 2024. According to contract projections, Bregman is expected to land a five-year, $170 million contract this offseason.
If the Red Sox do lose out on Bregman, their options for adding multiple impact bats this offseason will continue to dwindle. One possible domino that could fall if Arizona lands Bregman is the future of star second baseman Ketel Marte. Trading away Marte for top prospects or controllable starting pitching could allow Arizona to address other deficiencies across their roster, while replacing at least some of Marte's bat with the addition of Bregman.
If that's the case, the Red Sox would make plenty of sense as a viable suitor for Marte, with Marcelo Mayer standing as a potential contingency plan at third base if Bregman walks. However, the Red Sox's concerns about Bregman's steep payout and production dip last season could be a sticking point in negotiations. The question remains: will the Red Sox be able to retain Bregman or will they be outbid by the Diamondbacks?
